Camarillo – Mail Theft

During the months of April and May 2026, the Camarillo Police Department investigated a significant spike in mail thefts and related check fraud cases involving forged and “washed” checks. Suspects deliberately stuffed exterior mailboxes at the Camarillo Post Office with cardboard to overfill them. Unsuspecting customers, unaware the boxes were full, placed outgoing mail, often containing checks, into the overflowing receptacles. The suspects would then return shortly afterward and remove the mail before it could be collected by postal workers. The stolen checks were subsequently altered or chemically “washed,” with dollar amounts changed, resulting in more than $100,000 in total losses to victims in the community.
